Science and Society

The pandemic has generated an enormous interest in science among the public. The pandemic response has also created an understandable skepticism about scientists and the scientific community. It is important that governments do not abuse science for political goals, and for that it is important that people have a broad understanding of science and know how they can critically evaluate its strengths and weaknesses.

Citizen Scientist Magazine

One goal of the Academy for Science and Freedom is to help promote science among the public, both young and old. We are launching a science magazine that will both excite people about the beauty, truth and wisdom of science and educate them about scientific uncertainties and how to think critically about important scientific topics. Published online, the magazine will include articles about a variety of scientific topics, new scientific discoveries, critical evaluations of important research areas, ethics, op-eds, and science-based policy pieces.

Science-Based Policy

It is natural and healthy that people have varying political views, but fraudulent science should not be used as a weapon against political opponents. Science is the search for truth in a humble and unbiased manner, letting the chips fall where they may. It is then the role of scientists to present this this information to decision and policy makers together with any uncertainties, while encourage them to also listen to other scientists. Regardless of ideology, academy fellows offer politicians and decision makers of all stripes unbiased guidance on scientific topics irrespectively of whether it fits with their political agenda.

Medical Ethics

Medical care and public health must be based on ethical principles. That was violated during the pandemic, with catastrophic results on the health of vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, broken families, the poor, the chronically ill and those with psychological problems. To put ethics at the forefront of public health, the Academy has developed and published the Ten Ethical Principles of Public Health.
